We chose coconut oil for its many health benefits, especially for dogs with dry skin or dull coats. Coconut oil is rich in healthy fats that can support skin hydration, reduce inflammation, and even help with digestion. Our dog, Rocket, had flaky skin for years, but since adding coconut oil to his treats and meals, we’ve seen a big improvement.
Blueberries are another key ingredient in these blueberry coconut dog treats. They’re packed with antioxidants, vitamins C and K, and fiber – all great for immune support, brain function, and overall health. Plus, Rocket is obsessed with them. If your dog loves fruit, these are a great way to add in natural sweetness and nutrients without added sugar or preservatives.
The secret to the gummy texture is gelatin, which is more than just a texture-enhancer. Plain, unflavored gelatin supports joint health, strengthens bones, improves gut function, and can even help dogs recover from injury. It’s made from collagen and is especially beneficial for older dogs or active breeds prone to joint issues.
When shopping for gelatin, be sure to choose a natural, unflavored gelatin for dogs – anything with added sugar, xylitol, or artificial coloring can be harmful. Knox Unflavored Gelatin is what we use. If you have time, homemade bone broth is another way to incorporate gelatin, but store-bought plain gelatin works just as well and saves hours of prep.
These blueberry coconut dog treats are simple to make, fun to serve, and full of dog-safe superfoods. If you’re looking for an easy way to boost your dog’s diet, these treats are a great place to start.

- Pour cold water in a saucepan. Sprinkle the gelatin powder over the surface and let sit for about 4-5 minutes.
- While waiting for gelatin to gel, puree the blueberries with 1/4 cup water.
- Once the gelatin powder has turned into a gel, stir the mixture over low heat until completely dissolved. Fight your urge to use high heat as this will affect the texture.
- Remove from heat and add the blueberry puree. Still until combined. Slowly pour into silicone molds. Only fill 1/2 way so you can leave room for the coconut oil later.
- Chill in fridge until just barely firm (approximately 10 minutes.)
- Melt coconut oil over low heat. Remove molds from fridge and pour coconut oil over top of gelatin. Fill until the mold is 3/4 full. Think 3 parts blueberry puree to 1 part coconut oil.
- Chill in fridge for 2-4 hours or until completely set.
Keep refrigerated for up to 2 weeks in a sealed container (if they last that long!)
The quantity depends on the size of the molds used and how much you fill them. I use small molds because I have a 12 lb. dachshund. I'm able to make about 30 treats. You can find the star silicone molds by clicking the link HERE.
I find that placing the silicone molds on a plate or tray BEFORE filling makes it easier to transport to the fridge without spills. I learned the hard way!
Sometimes, the coconut oil will separate from the gelatin when removing from the silicone. I think this happens if you let the gelatin set for too long in the fridge before adding the coconut oil.
*Talk to your vet if your dog has any allergies or health problems. These treats may not be suitable for all dogs.
Hi there. I’m just beginning to make treats for my dog. Your ingredient list doesn’t list coconut oil. Thanks.
I was wondering about that myself. We’re does the coconut come into play? Thank you!
So sorry about that! It’s all fixed. Hope you enjoy!
