These colorful gummy dog treats are not only lovely to look at, but they are packed with healthy nutrients and full of flavor.
We included coconut oil in this recipe because it does wonders for Rocket's dry and flaky skin. We also added blueberries because they are loaded with vitamins, fiber and are even shown to improve the health of animals. Blueberries also happen to be Rocket's favorite fruit so I can't deny him of his top choice!
The magic ingredient that gives these treats their gummy texture is gelatin. Before researching gelatin, I only knew it was somehow used to make my favorite childhood snack, Jell-O. What I didn't know is how healthy it is for dogs!
Gelatin derives from collagen taken from animal body parts. In dogs, gelatin aids in digestion, helps inflammation and is excellent for skin, bone and joint health. You can make gelatin from scratch by boiling chicken, but if you don't have hours to do so, you can buy it in the store.
When you buy gelatin, it's essential you chose plain, unflavored gelatin with no artificial colors or sweeteners. Anything else can be toxic to dogs. I use Knox Gelatin.

- Pour cold water in a saucepan. Sprinkle the gelatin powder over the surface and let sit for about 4-5 minutes.
- While waiting for gelatin to gel, puree the blueberries with 1/4 cup water.
- Once the gelatin powder has turned into a gel, stir the mixture over low heat until completely dissolved. Fight your urge to use high heat as this will affect the texture.
- Remove from heat and add the blueberry puree. Still until combined. Slowly pour into silicone molds. Only fill 1/2 way so you can leave room for the coconut oil later.
- Chill in fridge until just barely firm (approximately 10 minutes.)
- Melt coconut oil over low heat. Remove molds from fridge and pour coconut oil over top of gelatin. Fill until the mold is 3/4 full. Think 3 parts blueberry puree to 1 part coconut oil.
- Chill in fridge for 2-4 hours or until completely set.
Keep refrigerated for up to 2 weeks in a sealed container (if they last that long!)
The quantity depends on the size of the molds used and how much you fill them. I use small molds because I have a 12 lb. dachshund. I'm able to make about 30 treats. You can find the star silicone molds by clicking the link HERE.
I find that placing the silicone molds on a plate or tray before filling makes it easier to transport to the fridge without spills. I learned the hard way!
Sometimes, the coconut oil will separate from the gelatin when removing from the silicone. I think this happens if you let the gelatin set for too long in the fridge before adding the coconut oil.
*Talk to your vet if your dog has any allergies or health problems. These treats may not be suitable for all dogs.
Hi there. I’m just beginning to make treats for my dog. Your ingredient list doesn’t list coconut oil. Thanks.
I was wondering about that myself. We’re does the coconut come into play? Thank you!
