Summer is officially here. My husband, Rocket and I are finally coming out of hibernation after a long, cold, Utah winter. I have never been more ready to trade in my sweaters for my shorts.
With the arrival of summer comes seasonal shedding. Just as people have ways to cool off during those warm days, dogs have their own method for naturally regulating their internal body temperature. When the weather is hot, dogs prepare themselves for the warmer months by shedding their coat. Although shedding happens year-round, the majority of shedding occurs during the Spring when we see a drastic temperature change.
Shedding In The Home
The amount of shedding that occurs depends on the breed of dog. Most dogs are double coated and will shed to some extent. Even our dachshund with much less of an undercoat than say a Newfoundland still sheds in our house.
Not only does dog hair get everywhere, but pet dander, which is tiny particles of skin shed by dogs, can cause allergies like breathing problems and hives for many people. If you don't clean your house regularly, pet hair and dander can build up and cling to everything making it difficult to remove.
Fortunately, my husband and I are not allergic to dogs, but we are allergic to pollen. During the summer, Rocket will go outside, and his fur will collect pollen. When he comes back in the house, that pollen will cause sneezing, watery eyes and runny noses.
Even after I bathe Rocket, we will have symptoms because of the pollen-infused dog hair that he shed on the floor. Therefore, I have to be very diligent about cleaning our home.
Remove Pet Hair From The Floor
Pet hair and pet dander love to collect on the floor. By regularly cleaning your floor, you will prevent hair from building up, getting kicked around and ultimately finding its way into hard to reach corners and crevices.
I use Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pads to clean my floors. The pads have thick ridges that latch onto pet hair, dust and dirt. One of the main reasons why I use the product is because it traps allergens like pet dander so I can stay allergy-free. These dry cloths are so easy to use and quickly get the job done.
We have hardwood floors and tile throughout the upstairs of our house. The tile, specifically, is harder to clean because of the grout. Rocket's hair has a way of adhering to it like glue. I am impressed by how well the Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pads work to lift the hair out of the grout and small cracks. Occasionally, I will still need to use a Swiffer wet cloth to rid it of dog hair completely, but for everyday cleaning, it works great.
My favorite place to use these pads is under our bed. No matter how much I clean, hair and dust always manage to collect into a deep pile of yuck. I used to get on my hands and knees and awkwardly reach under the bed to clean the floor. With Swiffer, you don't even have to bend over as it easily cleans those hard to reach places. It's incredible how much one sheet can hold.
Rocket is very sensitive to strong fragrances. I never use perfume, scented detergent, or air fresheners. The Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pads are unscented, which makes me happy. After all, Rocket is only about a foot tall, so his little nose is always close to the floor!
Cleaning Other Surfaces
The Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pads are meant to be used on the floor, but I find them useful for many other surfaces. Because they are so efficient at picking up dog hair, I use them to dust furniture, my blinds, walls, and ceiling fans.

In conclusion, the Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pads are great for taking care of everyday messes. They are fantastic if you have pets and perfect for people with allergies. The refill pack, available at Sam's Club, comes with 86 pads in each package, so you'll always be prepared for all the messes coming your way.
